| Powder Springs is located about 15 miles NW of Atlanta in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Marietta which is the county seat of Cobb County. Originally incorporated as Springville in 1838 in the lands of Cherokee Indian chiefs, Chief Nose and Chief Ana Kanasta(Sweetwater), when settlers came to this area to mine for
gold. It was renamed Powder Springs in 1859 after some of the 7 springs found within the city limits where the water contains 26 minerals which turned the soil black like gun powder...thus the name Gunpowder Springs.
